The most common cause of a non-contact injury is not bad luck, weak genetics, or a single bad landing. It is a training error, usually a sudden spike in workload that the body had no chance to prepare for. Across more than 500 athletes in our dataset, the pattern was relentless: injuries clustered not around the highest training weeks, but around the weeks where load jumped fastest relative to what came before.
That insight is captured in the Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio, the relationship between what an athlete did this week and what they have been conditioned to handle over the previous month. Stay inside a narrow band and the body adapts; jump outside it and the same training that should build the athlete starts breaking them instead.
The Goldilocks Zone
Picture chronic workload as a wall the athlete has slowly built over weeks, and acute workload as the wave crashing against it this week. A small wave against a tall wall does nothing but reinforce it. A sudden surge against a low wall washes it away. The ratio between the two predicts injury risk more reliably than any single hard session ever could.

Our data showed risk rising sharply once the acute load outran the chronic load by a meaningful margin. The takeaway is counterintuitive: the safest way to handle big training weeks is to be the kind of athlete who trains consistently enough that big weeks are no longer a shock.

- Raise the floor before the ceiling: A high chronic workload is protective; build it steadily so acute spikes land softly.
- Cap the jumps: Keep weekly load increases modest rather than chasing dramatic overload sessions that outrun adaptation.
- Periodise on purpose: Plan hard and easy blocks deliberately so peaks and recovery are scheduled, not accidental.

It is about doing the right amount at the right time so the body is always one step behind the demand, never two steps short of it.
